Act on the Direct Election of the European Parliament with a Five-Year Term

The Act of 20 September 1976 gave the European Parliament further legitimacy and prestige through its subsequent election by direct universal suffrage. The Act was revised in 2002, establishing the general principle of proportional representation and other framework provisions for member states’ legislation regarding European elections.
