The European Commission has allocated an additional 40 million euros in emergency aid for those affected by the worsening humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, as well as for Afghan refugees in neighboring Pakistan and Iran. This brings the EU’s total humanitarian aid for the Afghan crisis to 77 million euros in 2019: 61 million euros in Afghanistan, 9 million euros in Pakistan, and 7 million euros in Iran.
The new funding will provide assistance to the most vulnerable families across the country, focusing on victims of war, forced displacements, and natural disasters, as well as returning Afghan refugees. It includes the provision of emergency healthcare, shelter, food, access to clean water and sanitation facilities, as well as protection services, targeting women and children. The EU will also continue to provide education to children who have been forced to leave their schools.
In Pakistan, EU funding will provide assistance to Afghan refugees, as well as internally displaced Pakistanis. In Iran, EU aid will ensure the provision of vital assistance, including protection and access to basic services such as education and healthcare, to Afghan refugees in the country.
The EU has been funding humanitarian operations in Afghanistan since 1992, providing 872 million euros to date. Funds are strictly allocated based on the humanitarian principles of independence, impartiality, and neutrality to ensure access to those in need and are provided only to humanitarian organizations.
