Approval of the Draft Treaty Establishing the European Union by the European Parliament

The European Parliament, with 201 votes in favor, 37 against, and 72 abstentions, approves a Resolution regarding the “content of the draft Treaty establishing the European Union”. This Draft was presented a day before and had been prepared by the Committee on Institutional Affairs after almost a year of preparation, with Altiero Spinelli, Member of the European Parliament and one of the pioneers in the process of European integration, as coordinator-rapporteur. This “Draft Treaty”, also known as the “Spinelli Plan”, was approved by the European Parliament on February 14, 1984, with 237 votes in favor, 31 against, and 43 abstentions.
