Belarus: EU Allocates 700,000 Euros for Humanitarian Aid to Vulnerable People Trapped at the Border

17/11/2021

The European Commission, responding immediately to a relevant appeal, has granted humanitarian aid funding of 200,000 euros to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). This funding is part of the EU’s overall contribution to the emergency disaster relief fund managed by the IFRC. This immediate EU funding will support the IFRC and its national body in Belarus, the Belarus Red Cross, to provide critical assistance, including food, hygiene items, blankets, and first aid kits. The EU has mobilized an additional 500,000 euros for humanitarian aid funding and is currently in contact with its humanitarian partner organizations for the absorption of funds. The European Commission is ready to provide additional humanitarian aid funding to address the evident humanitarian needs, should access for humanitarian partner organizations in Belarus further improve. All EU humanitarian aid is based on international humanitarian principles. The EU provides humanitarian assistance based on the needs of people affected by man-made and natural disasters, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable victims. This aid is distributed impartially to affected populations, regardless of race, ethnic group, religion, gender, age, nationality, or political beliefs.
