Brexit – Start of Negotiations with the United Kingdom Based on Article 50

On May 22, 2017, the European Council approved the start of negotiations with the United Kingdom based on Article 50 and appointed the Commission as the Union’s negotiator. The Commission welcomed the approval of the first set of negotiating directives that provided the European Commission with the necessary political and legal mandate to negotiate with the United Kingdom on behalf of the EU-27.
