The Single Market, created 30 years ago, is the jewel of European integration and a key source of shared prosperity. However, in an increasingly confrontational, unstable, and complex world, a specific strategic review is required to ensure its resilience.
The European Council of 30 June 2023 called for the preparation of an independent Report on the future of the Single Market, with the aim of presenting it at the March 2024 Summit. At the same time, it called on the upcoming Council Presidencies and the Commission to continue this process in consultation with member states.
Both member states and the European Commission wish to draw concrete and ambitious proposals from the report. For this reason, former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta undertook the writing of the report, which is now available.
To compile the report, which may determine the future of the Single Market for years to come, Mr. Letta traveled throughout Europe and beyond, gathering information and opinions. One of his important stops was the 2023 SME Assembly, where he had the opportunity to converse with participants from all over Europe and understand the critical issues at stake. Equally important were the data and analyses that came from the SME Envoys Network, contributing to the formation of a comprehensive analysis.
