EU-Australia Relations: Entry into Force of the Framework Agreement

Today, the framework agreement between the EU and Australia officially enters into force, marking a new phase in the bilateral relationship.
It is a significant agreement that formalizes the strategic partnership between the EU and Australia and encourages strengthening ties between leaders, businesses, and civil society representatives.
It will serve as the foundation for future cooperation between the two parties, enabling them to address various challenges at bilateral, regional, and global levels.
The framework agreement aims to enhance cooperation in a wide range of policy areas, specifically:
Foreign policy and security policy, Global development and humanitarian aid, Economic and trade issues, Justice and legal cooperation, Research, innovation, information society, Education and culture, Sustainable development, energy and transport, Fisheries and maritime affairs, Health.
On April 15, 2016, the High Representative and the Commission submitted to the Council a joint proposal for a Council decision on the signing and provisional application of the framework agreement between the EU and its member states, on the one hand, and Australia, on the other. The agreement was signed in Manila (Philippines) on August 7, 2017.
On November 28, 2016, the High Representative and the Commission submitted to the Council a joint proposal for a Council decision on the conclusion of the framework agreement and, on April 18, 2018, the European Parliament gave its consent.
The decision to conclude the framework agreement was adopted by the Council on September 20, 2022.
