Today, one of the largest projects funded by the Cohesion Policy in the EU and Greece, the extension of the Metro line in Athens, is being inaugurated. This project received an EU contribution of €470 million. euros. This project completes Metro line 3 from Athens to Piraeus and dramatically improves the accessibility of the urban transport network in the Attica urban area. With the completion of the project, an additional population of 174,000 people is expected to have easy access to the Metro network. This will reduce the use of private vehicles and carbon dioxide emissions. This project is part of the broader Cohesion Policy investments in public transport infrastructure in the Attica region, which mainly include Metro, tram, bus, and suburban rail networks.
