EU Energy Days COP28

4/12/2023

The EU Energy Days COP28 focus on the transition to clean energy forms following a global commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency.
On December 4 and 5, 2023, the European Commission hosts the EU Energy Days at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. For the first time, the high-level conference will last two days and include 9 sessions, which will be broadcast from the EU pavilion in Dubai.
The events take place following the signing by 121 countries of the Global Pledge on Renewables and Energy Efficiency, a joint initiative of the EU and the COP28 Presidency, presented by President Ursula von der Leyen at the Global Climate Action Summit over the weekend. The pledge sets global targets to triple global installed renewable energy capacity and double the global rate of energy efficiency improvement by 2030 compared to the previous decade. Achieving these goals will support the transition to a decarbonized energy system and contribute to the phasing out of fossil fuels without CO2 capture and storage. Over the weekend, the Commission President also announced support of 175 million Euros for the Methane Finance Sprint to boost methane reduction. These resources will catalyze efforts by governments, industry, and philanthropic actors to reduce methane emissions across the energy sector, including supporting the methane data revolution using new satellites. At the same time, in a statement, President Ursula von der Leyen presented the first EU legislation to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector, with globally pioneering standards for measuring, detecting, and stopping emissions in the EU and worldwide.
As part of the Global Methane Pledge, launched by the EU and the US (COP26 in 2021), more than 150 countries are now implementing the collective goal of reducing global anthropogenic methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030, from 2020 levels. This global initiative will help keep the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius within reach.
The 28th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an important international Summit where global leaders, environmental experts, activists, and stakeholders meet to discuss and negotiate actions to combat climate change. The Commission participates in the COP annually and organizes various side events addressing various climate-related issues. In 2023, it was hosted from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
