EU Humanitarian Aid in Georgia

19/8/2008

The Humanitarian arm of the European Commission, ECHO, has released one million euros to help alleviate the suffering of the displaced Georgian people. In the capital Tbilisi alone, there are more than 70,000 homeless people. Humanitarian organizations are moving to the countryside to assess the extent of the crisis. On August 19, 2008, Phillipe Royan, one of ECHO’s experts, traveled with a World Food Programme (WFP) convoy to remote villages on the mountainside outside Gori. The European Commission funded WFP’s operation in Georgia.
