José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, and the EU Heads of State and Government met in Brussels for the European Council hosted by Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council.
In his speech after the final working session, José Manuel Barroso outlined three key areas of the Council’s outcomes: short-term measures to support countries under market pressure; full agreement on a growth and jobs pact that will turn words into concrete action and financial commitments; and achieving a clear commitment to a banking Union.
The deepening of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) will continue. Following the report presented by Herman van Rompuy in close cooperation with the Presidents of the European Commission, the Eurogroup, and the European Central Bank (ECB), a specific and time-bound roadmap will be drawn up, taking into account the decisions made during this European Council.
