The European Council agreed on the number and distribution of seats in the Assembly to be elected by direct universal suffrage in 1978. The number of seats is as follows: Luxembourg 6, Ireland 15, Denmark 16, Belgium 24, Netherlands 25, France 81, Italy 81, United Kingdom 81, Germany 81. During the European Council, a general agreement was reached on the assessment of the economic situation characterized by a renewal of the economic climate. The Council is convinced that this renewal will continue in 1977. However, for a fairly long period, a relatively high unemployment rate is expected and its evolution in certain member states should continue to be closely monitored.
