The European Council of Copenhagen (21-22/06/1993) entrusted the Commission with the responsibility of preparing the White Paper on the long-term strategy for promoting growth, competitiveness, and employment. Furthermore, the accession of Austria, Finland, Sweden, and Norway for 1995 was confirmed, and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe were assured that they would become members as soon as they met the necessary political and economic conditions.
