At the European Council of Gothenburg (15-16/06/2001), the following political positions of the European Union were agreed upon: the negotiations for enlargement and the finalization of the framework that will lead to a positive outcome; the promotion of the discussion on the future of the Union; the adoption of a strategy for sustainable development that will add an environmental perspective to the Lisbon process for employment, economic reform, and social cohesion; the support for development and structural reforms of the political economy; the firm intention to undertake coordinated action against current crises, especially those in the Middle East and the Balkans.
