Extraordinary Meeting of the European Council

José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, President-elect of the European Commission, and the EU Heads of State and Government met in Brussels for a special session of the European Council, chaired by Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council.
The discussions focused on the deteriorating situation in Ukraine, job creation based on growth, and a series of important appointments to be made for top EU positions. Consequently, Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of Poland, and Federica Mogherini, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, were selected as candidates for President of the European Council and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, respectively.
