The fall of the Berlin Wall is a symbol of the collapse of communism in Central and Eastern Europe, which begins in Poland and Hungary. The German Democratic Republic opens its borders. Germany reunites after more than 40 years, and the eastern part joins the European Community on October 3, 1990.
