First Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought

The European Parliament establishes the annual Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to honor individuals and groups from around the world who fight for human rights. The first recipients of the prize are the activist and, later, President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, who fought against apartheid, and Soviet dissident Anatoly Marchenko, who is awarded the prize posthumously.
