First Session of the ECSC Court

10/12/1952

On December 10, 1952, the swearing-in of the first judges and the first session of the Court of Justice of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) took place, with the presence of Jean Monnet, President of the High Authority of the ECSC. The first President of the ECSC Court was Massimo Pilotti, who served in this position from 1952 to 1958.
The Court was established that year as the ECSC Court; however, with the entry into force of the Treaties of Rome, which established the European Atomic Energy Community and the European Economic Community (signed on March 25, 1957, and entered into force on January 1, 1958), the Court became, from October 7, 1958, the “single” Court for all three Communities (Court of Justice of the European Communities). The Court remains to this day the supreme Court of the EU responsible for the coherence and unity of the Community legal order.
