Foreign Affairs Council, 591st Meeting

On July 24, 1979, the Council convened its 591st Session, dedicated to Foreign Affairs, at the Charlemagne building in Brussels. The meeting was chaired by Michael O’Kennedy, Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs and acting President of the Council. The meeting was attended by Roy Jenkins, President of the Commission of the European Communities, and Wilhelm Haferkamp, Vice-President of the Commission of the European Communities responsible for External Relations. The Council approved a four-year Community program to promote research, industrial development, and applications of data processing. The Council agreed on the Regulation introducing the registration in the Community for imports of crude oil and petroleum products. The Council heard a report from the Commission on the results of the first meeting of the Joint Committee established under the EEC-China Trade Agreement of April 3, 1978, which was held in Beijing from July 17 to 19, 1979. The Council exchanged views on the adjustments requested by Portugal to its current agreement with the Community.
