Gender Equality: EU Extends the Duration of the Gender Action Plan in External Action

21/11/2023

During 2021-2022, the first years of implementing the new EU Gender Action Plan (GAP III), the European Union committed €22.4 billion to contribute to building a world with greater gender equality, as reported in the joint interim report of the European Commission and the European External Action Service on the implementation of GAP III that was just published. The EU has supported partner countries and civil society to improve the situation regarding gender equality, an effort that has brought transformative results in terms of, among others, increasing the protection of women and girls from gender-based violence, expanding their participation in public and political life, improving their access to education, health and social protection, and their economic empowerment, as part of the “Team Europe” approach.
In order to build on these achievements, the EU is extending the duration of the Gender Action Plan from 2025 to 2027 with the aim of a gender-equal world.
The Gender Action Plan is the EU’s ambitious strategy to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 5, accelerating progress on gender equality and women’s empowerment as a priority across all EU external policies and actions, including as one of the central points of the Global Gateway strategy. It seeks to empower women and girls to participate and take on leadership positions
