German Reunification

3/10/1990

East Germany reunites with the Federal Republic of Germany. Simultaneously, it joins the European Economic Community (EEC) through a special procedure. More specifically, East Germany entered the EEC as part of the FRG, after the reunification of the two. In order for East Germany to be represented in the European Parliament, the latter decided to welcome 18 observers, without voting rights, who represented the new German provinces until the 1994 elections, in which Germany’s representation in the European Parliament increased by this number.
