Launch of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex)

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency is officially inaugurated to strengthen the management and security of the EU’s external borders. More specifically, it supports the EU and Schengen countries in managing the EU’s external borders and combating cross-border crime.

Frontex is also a center of excellence for border control activities at the EU’s external borders, within which information and expertise are exchanged with all EU countries, as well as with neighboring third countries affected by migration trends and cross-border crime.
