Meeting of the Six in Brussels

The Heads of State and Government and political representatives of the European Community of Six – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands – met in Brussels on 19 and 20 August 1954. The European Defense Community was one of the most important topics discussed at this conference. There was a request from France, represented by Pierre Mendès France, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, to soften the supranational character of the European Defense Community. However, this request was rejected.
