Monnet Draft No.5 in View of the Schuman Declaration

27/4/1950

Jean Monnet, along with his close associates, proceeded to draft the fifth draft, continuing the path towards the Schuman Declaration. As the head of the General Commission for Modernization and Equipment Planning of France, Monnet saw that the prosperity of his country lay in the prosperity of Europe. His rationale was that the joint production of resources by the two strongest countries on the continent, France and Germany, could prevent a new war in the future. He was the author of the content of the Schuman Declaration, seeing in the latter – the French Foreign Minister – an important political alliance.
