Mr. Herman Van Rompuy Elected President of the European Council

During their informal Summit in Brussels on 19 November 2009, the EU Heads of State and Government unanimously decide to appoint Mr. Herman Van Rompuy as the first permanent President of the European Council, who officially assumed his duties with the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty on 1 December 2009. On 1 March 2012, Herman Van Rompuy is elected for a second term as President of the European Council, from 1 June 2012 to 30 November 2014.
