Operation Shark Bait: Live Demonstration of the Galileo Satellites’ SAR Rescue Service

26/9/2011

The Commission’s Directorate-General GROW organized a live demonstration of Galileo’s Search and Rescue (SAR) Service, named Operation Shark Bait, in the North Sea off the Belgian coast. Galileo’s Search and Rescue Service provides increased location accuracy from 10 kilometers to less than 2 kilometers in rescue operations worldwide, coordinated by the international rescue program Cospas Sarsat. It reduced the time required to locate a person equipped with a distress beacon to less than 10 minutes at sea, in mountains, or in deserts.
