With 401 votes in favour, on 18 July the European Parliament elected Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission by secret ballot.
This will be Ursula von der Leyen’s second term as Commission President, having been first elected by MEPs in July 2019.
The Parliament currently consists of 719 MEPs, so the required majority was 360 votes. The vote was taken by secret ballot in a ballot box. 401 MEPs voted in favour, 284 against and 22 votes were blank or invalid.
Before the vote, Ursula von der Leyen presented her vision and plans for the next five years in a debate in the plenary session of the Parliament.
Next Steps
The President-elect of the Commission will now send formal letters to the Heads of State and Government of the Member States, asking them to propose Commissioners-designate. Hearings in the relevant EP committees are scheduled for after the summer.
