Ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by the European Union

On May 31, 2002, the European Union ratified the Kyoto Protocol. This ratification fulfilled the EU’s ambition to enable the Kyoto Protocol to come into force before the World Summit on Sustainable Development in August/September 2002. The ratification of the Kyoto Protocol took place at the United Nations headquarters, in the presence of Margot Wallström, member of the European Commission responsible for Environmental issues, Jaume Matas i Palou, Minister of Environment of Spain and President of the EU Council, Kjell Larsson, Minister of Environment of Sweden, Noel Dempsey, Minister of Environment and Local Government of Finland, and Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
