Referendum on the European Constitution in Luxembourg

10/7/2005

On July 10, 2005, the Luxembourg authorities held a referendum on the draft European Constitution. The majority of voters (56.52%) voted in favor of the Treaty establishing a European Constitution.
This referendum was the first since EU leaders announced last month a period of reflection on the future of the European Union. Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Luxembourg, decided to proceed with the referendum despite the fact that ratification had been suspended due to the rejection of the Constitution by France and the Netherlands. He stated that he would resign if the document was rejected by his fellow citizens.
