Relocation of 120,000 Asylum Seekers Decided by Ministers of Interior Affairs

22/9/2015

During the extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council, EU Ministers of Interior Affairs decided to relocate 120,000 asylum seekers. These people had mainly sought refuge in Italy and Greece, with a large number fleeing the war in Syria, and were in need of international protection. They would be housed in other EU countries. This was a temporary measure taken to address the large number of asylum seekers heading from Greece to other EU countries and finding some borders closed. The Commission proposed the creation of a permanent relocation system as well as a further package of other measures to manage this crisis.
