René Mayer, former President of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC)

At the Messina Conference (1-3 June), where the Foreign Ministers of the Six ECSC countries met to give new impetus to the idea of European integration, they decided, among other things, to appoint the former President of the French Council of Ministers, René Mayer, as President of the High Authority.
