Signing of Joint Declaration for Portugal’s Accession to the European Communities

A Joint Declaration is signed in Dublin between Garrett FitzGerald, acting President of the Council of the European Communities and Prime Minister of Ireland, Mário Soares, Prime Minister of Portugal, and Lorenzo Natali, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Enlargement, which refers to their desire for Portugal to become a member state of the European family from January 1, 1986. Indeed, from January 1, 1986, Portugal and Spain acceded to the European Communities.
