Signing of the 3rd Lomé Convention between ACP-EEC

The 3rd Convention between the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of states and the European Economic Community (EEC) is signed in Lomé (Togo). The new Convention was also signed by Mozambique, which became the 65th ACP country. This officially completed the process that allowed the ACP group of states and the European Communities to reaffirm their relations by improving, strengthening and diversifying the mechanisms and means of the Convention. This signing demonstrated the parties’ shared desire to ensure the continuity of ACP/EEC cooperation in a particularly challenging international context. For the European Communities, the completion of negotiations was especially significant. Although significant internal difficulties persist, the European Union, through the political act of signing the new Convention, expressed its willingness to contribute significantly to the development efforts of the ACP states.
