Signing of the Maastricht Treaty

The Treaty on European Union is signed in Maastricht, the Netherlands. It is a significant milestone as it establishes clear rules for the future single currency and for the common foreign and security policy, as well as for closer cooperation in the field of justice and home affairs. The “European Union” is officially created with the Treaty, which comes into effect on November 1, 1993.
