Signing of the Treaty of Nice

The Treaty of Nice is signed by the leaders of the 15 EU member states in the city of Nice, France. This Treaty changes the EU’s decision-making process to prepare the EU for the accession of Eastern European countries once they are ready. The legislative and supervisory powers of the European Parliament are increased. The Treaty comes into effect on February 1, 2003.
