Start of Community-Portugal Negotiations

The inaugural Ministerial Conference between the European Communities and Portugal takes place, marking the beginning of negotiations for Portugal’s accession to the Communities. Portugal had submitted an application for membership to the European Economic Community, the European Coal and Steel Community, and Euratom on March 28, 1977, and on June 6, 1978, the Council of the European Communities responded positively to this request.
