Strengthening Ties between the European Union and the Maldives

8/8/2019

Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, traveled to Malé, Maldives for a bilateral visit. She met with Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, President of the Maldives, Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, and Mariya Didi, Minister of Defense of the Maldives.
At the invitation of Mohamed Nasheed, Speaker of the Parliament of the Maldives, Federica Mogherini also addressed the Parliament on strengthening ties between the European Union and the Maldives. Her visit followed the decision of the Council of the European Union to revoke the framework of restrictive measures against the Maldives adopted in July 2018. The lifting of sanctions is a direct response to the peaceful and democratic parliamentary elections of April 2019, the improvement in the overall political situation since Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took office, and the Government’s commitment to consolidate good governance and democracy.
