Support for West African Countries of the Gulf of Guinea

The Union is conducting a mission within the framework of the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) with the strategic objective of helping West African countries of the Gulf of Guinea, where this mission is established, to develop appropriate capabilities within their security and defense forces to contain and address pressures exerted by armed terrorist groups. The initiative is being established in Benin and Ghana. The Council may decide that the initiative will also be established in other West African countries of the Gulf of Guinea, as defined in the Crisis Management Concept for a potential partnership with West African countries of the Gulf of Guinea in the areas of security and defense, which was approved by the Council on June 29, 2023, following an invitation from these countries
International humanitarian law, human rights and the principle of gender equality, the protection of civilians, as well as the agendas included in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace and security, UN Security Council Resolution 2250 (2015) on youth, peace and security, and UN Security Council Resolution 1612 (2005) on children and armed conflict, are fully and proactively integrated into the strategic and operational planning, activities, and reporting within the framework of the initiative.
The initiative implements non-military and military projects in these countries to achieve the strategic objective.
This decision is valid for a period of two years from the start of the initiative
