The Ad Hoc Assembly

10/9/1952

The Ad Hoc Assembly was established by a Council Decision on September 10, 1952, with the purpose of drafting a European Constitutional Charter before March 10, 1953, essentially a draft Treaty for the establishment of the European Political Community. It convened nine times between September 1952 and March 1953, but due to the opposition of the French Parliament to the ratification of the Treaty establishing the European Defense Community [August 1954], the plan for the European Political Community [as an institutional consequence] was abandoned.
