The Citizens of Latvia Vote in Favor of the Country’s Accession to the EU in a Referendum

A referendum is held in Latvia on the country’s accession to the EU. 67% of Latvian voters vote in favor. The turnout reached 72.53%. The result paved the way for the former Soviet republic to join the Union along with nine other countries on May 1, 2004. Latvia was the last of the 10 candidate countries to hold a referendum. Voters in Malta, Slovenia, Hungary, Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Estonia voted in favor of EU accession in referendums during the current year. Only Cyprus approved its accession to the Union without a referendum.
