Aiming to activate NextGenerationEU, the Commission made a series of decisions to implement a diversified funding strategy. It established a robust governance framework, which aims for coherent and consistent execution. It also ensured a clear allocation of responsibilities within the institution for the implementation of the relevant processes.
In this way, the Commission created the operational framework under which it will use a new and more flexible approach to raising NextGenerationEU funds in the capital markets. The funding of NextGenerationEU, which is a key tool for the Union’s response to the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, is done through the capital markets and amounts to approximately 800 billion euros to be raised by 2026.
