Two years after the Paris Agreement, the EU firmly maintains a leading position in combating climate change. To this end, the Commission announced today in Paris during the “One Planet Summit”, a series of initiatives for a modern and clean economy.
The Commission participated today in Paris at the “One Planet Summit”, organized by French President Emmanuel Macron. At the Summit, the Commission presented its new Action Plan for the Planet, which includes 10 transformative initiatives for a modern economy and a fair society. All of these are reflected in the framework of the 10 political priorities of the Juncker Commission.
The Paris Agreement sends a clear message to capital markets and investors – from both public and private sectors – that the global transition to clean energy is here to stay. Recognizing that the Paris Agreement is a key element for the modernization of European industry and economy, the Commission considers it an opportunity for EU businesses to maintain and capitalize on “the first-mover advantage” in promoting renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, and competition in the development of the clean technology market globally.
The EU is setting an example and creating a favorable environment that accelerates public and private investments in innovation and modernization across all key sectors. We are making this transition to a modern and clean economy taking into account the differences in energy mix and economic structures across the EU. Beyond updating and strengthening its energy and climate legislation, the EU aims to develop favorable measures that will stimulate investments, create jobs, empower and provide innovation opportunities for industries, and ensure that no citizen, worker, or region is left behind in this process.
The Summit brought together stakeholders involved in implementing the modern and clean economy and those who have the ability to finance climate action.
France organized the Summit together with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim. The European Commission was one of the key partners.
