The Commission Proceeds with a Ban on British Beef Exports

27/3/1996

The Commission imposes a worldwide ban on exports of British beef and bovine products following the outbreak of a disease known as “mad cow disease”. To address this problem and other food crises in the late 1990s, the EU established stricter food safety rules and in 2002 founded the European Food Safety Authority, based in Parma, Italy. This authority provides scientific advice on risks associated with the food chain.
