The Council Announces the First European Elections with Direct and Universal Suffrage

It is announced by the Heads of State and Government at the European Council meeting in Copenhagen (April 7-8) that between June 7 and 10, 1979, the first European elections with direct and universal suffrage will be held for the election of the members of the European Parliament. Furthermore, during the same meeting, plans for the European Monetary System are presented by Helmut Schmidt and Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, the German Chancellor and the President of France, respectively.
