The Europol Convention is Signed

26/7/1995

The Europol Convention was signed on July 26, 1995, and came into force in October 1998, after being ratified by all EU member states. Europol began its full activities on July 1, 1999. Europol came under the jurisdiction of the European Union with the Treaty of Lisbon, and the Convention was replaced by a Council Decision in 2009. It was reformed as a full EU agency on January 1, 2010.
Europol, headquartered in The Hague, operates as the European Union’s center of expertise, providing a central platform for law enforcement experts from European Union countries.
Europol does not have executive powers. Europol officers do not have the right to conduct investigations in EU member states nor do they have direct arrest powers. They support their EU law enforcement colleagues by collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information and coordinating operations.
