A new round of trade negotiations begins in Tokyo within the framework of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). In his speech, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Christopher Soames, mentions the two general objectives of the Community throughout the negotiations. The first concerns the liberalization of international trade with mutual benefits. The second concerns efforts to enhance the participation of developing countries in the expansion of world trade.
