The Referendum in Hungary Ratifies the Country’s Accession to the Union

Hungary’s binding referendum was the third of nine in the series for the enlargement of the European Union from 15 to 25 member states. According to the final official results released by the National Election Office, 83.76% of voters voted in favor of joining the EU and 16.24% against, but turnout reached 45.62%. Nevertheless, the vote was valid because more than two million Hungarians voted “yes.”
