The Schuman Declaration and Europe Day

9/5/1950

Five years after the end of World War II, the then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented a plan for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make the prospect of war between its peoples unthinkable. Schuman’s proposal is considered the beginning of today’s European Union. This is why on this day the EU celebrates its birthday every year — Europe Day.
As part of the celebrations, every May the European institutions open their doors to the general public. EU local offices in Europe and around the world organize events and activities for all ages.
