The Thieffry Case and the Recognition of Professional Practice within the EU

28/4/1977

The Court issues a ruling on Case 71/76, Thieffry. According to this decision, the Court holds that if a national of a member state establishes themselves in another member state for professional activity and their educational qualifications (diploma) from their home country have been recognized as equivalent in the country of professional establishment by the competent authorities, it constitutes a restriction incompatible with the freedom of establishment if the legislation of the latter requires obtaining a national diploma as well.
