The Treaty of Accession for Ten New Members to the Union is Signed

The signing ceremony of the Treaty of Accession of the Future Member States of the EU took place during the Informal European Council in Athens, under the Greek Presidency. The ten new candidate members, namely: Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia, represented by their Heads of State or Government and Foreign Ministers, signed the Treaty of Accession in anticipation of their accession to the Union on May 1, 2004. The current EU member states have also signed the “Treaty for the Accession to the European Union of 2003”.
